In an effort to address the challenges posed by the scorching summer heat, Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra conducted a thorough review of various measures implemented in urban areas.

During the review, Dr. Mahapatra emphasized the importance of ensuring a consistent supply of drinking water and resolving public grievances promptly.

Key measures announced during the review include:

  1. Operationalizing Dormant Tube Wells: Dr. Mahapatra directed that all dormant tube wells be made operational to bolster the drinking water supply.
  2. 24×7 Control Rooms: The establishment of 24×7 control rooms to monitor and address issues related to drinking water supply was mandated.
  3. Emergency Measures: Water tankers will be deployed to supply drinking water to critical areas, and water supply pipelines will be maintained in proper working condition. Complaints must be addressed within 24 hours.
  4. Opening Water Kiosks: Municipalities are instructed to open additional water kiosks at strategic locations such as roadsides, squares, government offices, bus stands, railway stations, and markets to ensure easy access to drinking water.
  5. Dust Control Measures: Construction areas must be covered, and roadsides cleaned to prevent flying dust. Construction materials transported must be covered with tarpaulin sheets.
  6. Ban on Coal: The use of coal or coal briquettes in urban areas is prohibited to reduce dust pollution.
  7. Restoring Water Bodies: Efforts will be made to restore and rehabilitate water bodies in and around urban areas to make them accessible and usable for the public.

Dr. Mahapatra stressed the importance of adhering to the detailed SOPs issued by the Housing and Urban Development Department. The instructions come in the wake of unusual rains and irregular weather patterns that have led to an abnormal increase in temperatures during the summer season.

The review meeting, held virtually, was attended by Director Municipal Administration Arindam Dakua, Additional Secretary Ravindra Sahu, Commissioners of all Municipal Corporations, Executive Officers of Municipalities and NACs, along with other concerned officers. The Minister urged all authorities to ensure that the measures are implemented swiftly and effectively to combat the heatwave and safeguard public health.
