Shreyas Iyer Shares Health Update from Sydney Hospital: ‘Getting Better Every Passing Day’

India’s middle-order batter and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has shared his first official health update following the lacerated spleen injury he sustained during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney last Saturday.

Posting from his hospital bed, Iyer thanked fans for their constant support and assured everyone that he is on the path to recovery.

“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful for all the wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer wrote on his Instagram story.

The Incident: A Catch That Turned Painful

The injury occurred when Iyer took a spectacular catch running backward to dismiss Alex Carey. What began as a moment of celebration soon turned worrisome as Iyer appeared in visible pain, clutching his ribs and struggling to get up.

He was helped off the field by the physio, leaving teammates and fans anxious.

Hospitalization and Medical Updates

A day later, reports confirmed that Iyer had suffered internal bleeding and was admitted to the ICU of a Sydney hospital. The BCCI later issued an official statement confirming a laceration to his spleen but denied reports suggesting surgery.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that while the injury was serious, Iyer’s condition had stabilized thanks to immediate medical attention. According to sources, his vitals had dropped sharply soon after the incident, and swift action by the team’s medical staff likely prevented a more dangerous outcome.

Recovery Timeline and Upcoming Matches

Although Iyer’s recovery update brought relief to fans, he is expected to be out of action for at least two months, as reported by RevSportz. This means he will miss the ODI series against South Africa and faces a race against time to regain fitness for the New Zealand series in January.

India will certainly feel his absence. Before the injury, Iyer had been in fine form — after scoring 61 runs in Adelaide and stitching a century stand with Rohit Sharma, he looked set for another big series.

Iyer’s Impact and Role in the Indian Team

Over the past few years, Iyer has cemented his place as one of India’s most reliable ODI batters. Batting at No. 4, he was a key contributor to India’s Champions Trophy victory, scoring 243 runs in five matches.

In the 2023 ODI World Cup, he amassed 530 runs, including two centuries and three fifties — performances that proved crucial to India’s campaign alongside Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Named vice-captain to Shubman Gill, Iyer’s leadership and consistency have been instrumental in shaping India’s middle order.

With Hardik Pandya already sidelined, India will hope for Iyer’s speedy and complete recovery ahead of a packed cricketing calendar.

Fans and Teammates Send Support

Messages of support have flooded social media since the incident. Cricketers and fans alike have wished Iyer a quick recovery, with Suryakumar Yadav’s mother even offering Chhath Puja prayers for his health.

The Indian cricket fraternity continues to rally behind their vice-captain, eagerly awaiting his return to the field.
