Rohit Sharma is set to return to international cricket for the ODI tour of Australia later this year after successfully clearing the pre-season fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Rohit, who retired from Test cricket midway through the IPL 2025 season, has not played since the IPL.
During the fitness assessment, which included the Yo-Yo test and a DXA scan to check bone density, Rohit was joined by India Test captain Shubman Gill and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, all of whom cleared the mandatory fitness parameters. Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma also passed the test.
Rohit is likely to play preparatory matches for India A against Australia A in Kanpur on September 30, October 3, and 5 before the official ODI series. His selection for the tour is still pending confirmation, and he may continue training in Bengaluru in the meantime.
Gill, named vice-captain for the Asia Cup starting September 9 in the UAE, had previously pulled out of the Duleep Trophy due to fever but has now cleared the fitness test. Other squad members including Mohammed Siraj, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and Shardul Thakur also cleared their fitness assessments.
Remaining squad members Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, and Riyan Parag are expected to undergo a separate fitness evaluation before the tournament.
