Paris: India’s Deepika Kumari advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s archery event on Saturday by defeating Germany’s Michelle Kroppen in the 1/8 elimination round, while Bhajan Kaur was eliminated after a 6-5 loss to Indonesia’s Diananda Choirunisa.
Deepika outscored her German opponent 6-4 in the elimination round, starting with a 27-24 victory in the first set to secure two points. The second set ended in a 27-27 draw, splitting the points. Deepika then clinched the third set 26-25, adding two more points to her tally.
In the fourth set, Kroppen won 29-27, gaining two points, but Deepika maintained a two-point lead going into the final set.
The fifth set ended in a 27-27 tie, with the points divided, but Deepika’s overall score of 6-4 secured her spot in the quarterfinals.
In another match, India’s Bhajan Kaur put up a strong fight, but Choirunisa’s performance was superior on the day.
Choirunisa led 4-2 by the third set. She won the first set 29-28, earning two points, while Bhajan responded with a 27-25 win in the second set to equalize.
Choirunisa reclaimed the lead with a 28-26 win in the third set. The fourth set ended in a 28-28 draw, with both archers earning a point, bringing the score to 5-3 in favour of Choirunisa.
In the decisive fifth set, Bhajan matched Choirunisa with a 27-27 draw, pushing the match to a shoot-off. Bhajan scored eight against her opponent’s nine, resulting in a 5-6 defeat in the 1/8 elimination round for the quarterfinals.
