A tragic incident occurred in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Monday, where a nine-year-old girl lost her life in a bomb explosion amid the counting of votes for the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll.
The explosion took place in Barochandgar village, under Kaliganj police station limits, while vote counting was underway. According to a senior police officer quoted by PTI, the minor was seriously injured in the blast and later succumbed to her injuries.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “shocking and heartbreaking.” She assured that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Police shall take strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest.”
Authorities have sent the girl’s body for post-mortem and initiated a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Alifa Ahmed won the bypoll by a landslide margin of 50,049 votes, defeating BJP’s Ashish Ghosh. The incident has cast a grim shadow over the electoral process in the region.
