Balasore/Chandaneswar: In a big achievement, Balasore Police today claimed to have cracked the Chandaneswar Union Bank robbery with the arrest of six persons of a dacoity gang on Wednesday.
A special police team under the leadership of SP Sagarika Nath arrested six robbers after 69 days after the bank robbery and seized 300 grams of gold jewellery, Rs 6.02 lakh in cash, 4 bikes, 9 mobiles and 3 pistols from the arrested robbers.
In this context, SP Sagarika Nath, in a press conference at the police headquarters at Balasore, said that the six arrested robbers were involved in multiple bank robberies in Odisha and jewellery shop loot cases in West Bengal.
At noon of 26th April’23, six armed men entered the Chandaneswar Union Bank, put the bank staff at gunpoint and looted cash and jewellery from the bank. They looted about 600 packets of gold and a case containing Rs 45,52,910 and sped away towards West Bengal on motorcycles.
On the basis of a complaint lodged by bank manager Nawneet Khalko in Talsari police station, police started an investigation by checking CCTV footage and apprehended six persons with the help of a technical team and two different special teams.
The Balasore SP said that during the investigation they came to know that about 10 to 12 people were involved in the bank robbery. And the arrested persons confessed that they committed dacoity in Basta Branches of SBI & Bank of Baroda, UCO Bank of Bhograi and Union Bank of Chandaneswar of Balasore district.
They also confessed to having committed dacoity in a jewellery shop under Ramnagar PS of East Medinapore in West Bengal and also many places of the neighbouring state.
The arrested accused have been identified as Amar Kumar Dey, Tapan Ku Jena, Papu Das all three hailing from Kamarda PS area and Santanu Maity of Dantun Ps,5. Goutam Rout & Uttam Rout of Junput Coastal PS in West Bengal.
The gang was found to be involved in a total of 10 cases— four in Odisha and six in West Bengal, SP Sagarika Nath further informed.
