The Berhampur Special Fast-Track POCSO Court sentenced 20-year-old Ranjan Bishoi to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Bhanjanagar, Ganjam district.
The verdict, delivered by Judge Pranati Pattanaik, also imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on the convict, with an additional two years of imprisonment if the fine remains unpaid.
The case stems from an incident where Bishoi, a resident of Bhanjanagar, allegedly lured the minor to her home when she was alone and assaulted her. The crime came to light when the victim was found pregnant, prompting her family to file a complaint at the Bhanjanagar police station (Case No. 461/23). Following a thorough investigation, police arrested Bishoi and presented him before the court.
During the trial, the court examined witness testimonies and evidence, which conclusively proved Bishoi’s guilt. In addition to the jail term and fine, Judge Pattanaik ordered the District Legal Services Authority to provide ₹10.50 lakh as compensation to the victim, ensuring financial support for her recovery.
The prosecution, led by Special Public Prosecutor Narayan Panda, emphasised the need for stringent punishment to deter such heinous crimes. The verdict has been hailed as a step toward justice for victims of sexual violence, particularly minors, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
This ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to swift and fair trials in cases of sexual assault, sending a strong message to perpetrators. Local activists and community members have expressed relief at the outcome, hoping it will encourage more victims to come forward and seek justice.
