Odisha low-pressure rainfall alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which could intensify into Cyclone Shakti between May 23 and 28.

While no official cyclone warning has been issued yet, meteorological models suggest that coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal may experience heavy rainfall and strong winds if the system strengthens.

Early Monsoon Arrival & Weather Patterns

The southwest monsoon has already advanced into parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and sections of the north Andaman Sea, marking its earliest recorded onset in seven years. This early arrival has raised concerns about the interaction between monsoon currents and the developing storm system.

IMD’s Official Statement

Despite widespread speculation, the IMD has clarified that no official cyclone warning has been issued for Odisha at this time. While meteorological models indicate a possible cyclone formation, no conclusive data is available yet. The IMD has urged the public to rely on official bulletins for accurate weather forecasts instead of speculative reports.

Potential Impact & Precautionary Measures

If Cyclone Shakti forms, it may result in coastal flooding, high gusts, and heavy rainfall in low-lying areas. Officials in Bangladesh and India have started making preparations, urging residents in high-risk areas to seek shelter and ensure early warning systems are operational.

Residents are advised to:

  • Stay updated with IMD forecasts and local news.
  • Avoid coastal areas during the cyclone window.
  • Keep essential supplies handy, including drinking water, power banks, snacks, and medications.
  • Check flight and train schedules for possible delays.

Looking Ahead

The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, with further updates expected in the coming days. While the cyclone’s exact path remains uncertain, authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
