The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a severe heatwave alert across Odisha, with temperatures soaring past 40°C in numerous regions and reaching a scorching 45.4°C in Jharsuguda on Wednesday.

In its advisory issued Thursday, the IMD predicted that severe heatwave conditions, high humidity, and uncomfortably warm nights would persist across parts of the state from April 23 to 26.

Orange & Yellow Alerts in Effect:

An Orange Alert—signaling residents to prepare for heatwave-related health risks—has been issued for Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, and Bargarh. Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert—indicating potential weather threats—has been placed for Kalahandi, Nuapada, Deogarh, and Angul.

Hot and Humid Conditions Widespread:

Other districts expected to experience oppressive weather include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, and Dhenkanal.

The night temperature is also forecasted to remain high in districts like Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bolangir, and Mayurbhanj, making sleep uncomfortable and increasing heat-related health risks.

Health and Safety Advisory:

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure between 11 AM and 3 PM
  • Cover their heads using a wet cloth, hat, or umbrella when outdoors
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, soft drinks, and high-protein or stale food
  • Ensure that livestock are kept in shaded areas with access to clean drinking water

With over a dozen cities recording temperatures above 40°C, Odisha continues to battle one of the season’s harshest heatwaves.
