Pope Francis, the beloved leader of the Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88 following a stroke and cardiac arrest.
His tenure was marked by progressive reforms, advocacy for the poor, and challenges to Church traditionalists.
The Vatican has released images showing the late pontiff lying in his casket while prayers were led by the Vatican Secretary of State. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday, with global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, expected to attend.
In keeping with tradition, the Vatican performed ancient rituals, such as breaking the Fisherman’s Ring and his lead seal, ensuring no successor can use them. Cardinals have convened to oversee the Church’s operations until a new pope is elected in an upcoming conclave.
Before his passing, Pope Francis had expressed his wish to be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, diverging from the traditional St. Peter’s Basilica resting place.
His health had been fragile in recent months. Earlier this year, he spent five weeks battling double pneumonia in the hospital before returning to Vatican City. His passing marks the end of an era of reform and humanitarian focus within the Church.
