Dibakar Nayak, a veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI), breathed his last at the CPI state headquarters Bhagvati Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on Saturday night after a brief illness. He was 72.

Born in Sendchitira village of Bhadrak district, Nayak was a committed leader who dedicated his life to the communist movement. He began his political career as a student, emerging as a key figure in the All India Students’ Federation (AISF). Over the years, he served as the CPI state secretary and was also a member of the party’s national executive, solidifying his reputation as a formidable leader.

Apart from his political contributions, Nayak was known for his intellectual prowess as the former editor of the party publication Nua Dunia. His advocacy for workers’ rights as the state vice president of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) further established his influence in labour movements.

Following his passing, the CPI expressed deep condolences, recognising his unwavering commitment to the party and his role in shaping leftist ideology in the region. His mortal remains were placed at the party’s headquarters for fellow members and supporters to pay their respects. His final rites will be conducted in his ancestral village in Bhadrak.
