Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu conveyed heartfelt greetings to the nation on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, honoring the 2623rd birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism.

In a post shared on social media, PM Modi paid tribute to Mahavira’s enduring message of non-violence, truth, and compassion, stating that his principles continue to inspire millions globally. “We all bow to Bhagwan Mahavir, who always emphasised on non-violence, truth and compassion… His teachings have been beautifully preserved and popularised by the Jain community,” Modi wrote.

The Prime Minister also highlighted his government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage, referencing the recent move to confer Classical Language status on Prakrit, an ancient language closely associated with Jain scriptures.

Celebrated with reverence across India, Mahavir Jayanti falls on the 13th day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Chaitra. According to religious texts, Mahavira was born in 599 B.C. in Kundalagrama, near modern-day Patna in Bihar.

Navkar Mahamantra Divas

As part of the celebrations, PM Modi attended the Navkar Mahamantra Divas held at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi, where he joined participants from over 108 countries in chanting the revered mantra.

Describing the Navkar Mahamantra as “not just a chant but a source of inner strength and universal guidance,” Modi noted its relevance in both personal transformation and social harmony. In a gesture of humility, the Prime Minister participated barefoot and chose to sit among the audience rather than on the stage. He also outlined nine life resolutions inspired by the teachings of the mantra.

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu also extended her wishes, acknowledging the profound impact of Mahavira’s message on Indian society and its spiritual legacy.
