"24 Hours Have Passed": Rahul Gandhi Renews Open Debate Challenge to PM Modi; Amit Shah Says Govt Ready for Special Parliament Session

The political standoff between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition intensified on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi renewed his challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an open, televised debate on allegations of foreign influence and economic governance.

In a video statement shared on social media, Gandhi noted that 24 hours had passed since his initial dare, urging the Prime Minister to pick any stage or venue for the face-off.

“It has been 24 hours, Modi ji. I have challenged you. You say that the Opposition is anti-national. Pick any stage, any venue, and debate me. Who is anti-national? Who has links with foreign forces and what kind of connections are they? Do it as soon as possible. Don’t be afraid,” Gandhi stated in Hindi.

Scope of the Proposed Debate

Gandhi proposed that the open discussion take place in the presence of media personnel and youth representatives, suggesting RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat could moderate if preferred.

  • Economic Questions: The Congress leader insisted the debate cover the national financial structure, the timeline of recent U.S. trade agreements, Cabinet consultation protocols, and the closure of corporate investigation cases.
  • Defamation Challenge: Gandhi highlighted that despite facing approximately 45 legal actions, no defamation suits had been filed regarding his recent foreign connection statements, inviting legal scrutiny if warranted.
  • Public Social Media Poll: Gandhi also posted a poll on X, asking young citizens whether they wanted to see a “Rahul Gandhi vs Narendra Modi” open debate, tagging senior ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and UP CM Yogi Adityanath to urge participation.

Government Response & Counter-Challenge

Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to Gandhi’s statements during an address at the Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav in Raipur. Reiterating his earlier stance from Hyderabad, Shah emphasized that Parliament remains the proper constitutional forum for high-level political debate.

“Be it EVMs, SIR, infiltrators, I challenge you from Hyderabad. We are ready to convene a special session of Parliament. Come for debate.”

— Amit Shah, Union Home Minister

Shah stated the government is willing to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and border security concerns.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the public challenge format, asserting that parliamentary debates require formal proceedings, while BJP MP Nishikant Dubey offered to debate Gandhi at the Congress headquarters.
