Indian Stock Market: Sensex and Nifty Trade Flat Amid IT Sell-Off, Broader Markets Outperform

Benchmark Indian equity indices, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50, traded largely flat on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, amid elevated crude oil prices and significant selling pressure across IT stocks.

Despite subdued performance in front-line benchmark shares, broader market indices outperformed sharply, driven by strong buying interest in midcap, smallcap, auto, and defence stocks.

Benchmark Indices Rangebound as IT and Oil & Gas Slip

After opening on a negative note with the Sensex dropping over 320 points, benchmark indices recovered from early morning lows. By midday, the 30-share BSE Sensex traded around 73,560 (down 0.06%), while the NSE Nifty 50 hovered near 22,757 (up 0.03%).

Sectorally, the Nifty IT index was the top laggard, cracking nearly 1.7%, joined by losses in Oil & Gas and consumer staples like HUL and Asian Paints. Conversely, Nifty Pharma, Media, and Auto indices registered strong gains ranging between 1.5% and 3%.

Broader Markets Rally; Defence and Auto Stocks Zoom

In contrast to the flat headline indices, broader markets showed robust strength:

  • Nifty Smallcap 100: Surged over 2.5%, led by aggressive buying in second-tier equities.
  • Nifty Midcap 100: Gained nearly 0.8% to 1.0%.
  • Defence Equities: Defence stocks rallied up to 9% after the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved capital procurement proposals worth approximately ₹2.12 trillion. Apollo Micro Systems jumped 9%, followed by Data Patterns (+8.1%) and Paras Defence (+7.3%).
  • Auto Components: Sona BLW Precision Forgings zoomed nearly 10% to a new lifetime high of ₹858.95 on strong Q2 earnings, while Ather Energy surged 6% (up 20% over two sessions) following its first-ever quarterly net profit.

Corporate Developments and Primary Markets

In corporate highlights, Tata Motors shares rose over 4% to ₹400.55 as its acquisition bid for Italian truck manufacturer Iveco crossed the crucial 80% acceptance threshold. Meanwhile, primary market activity remained buoyant with BLS Polymers’ ₹255-crore IPO reaching 3.90 times overall subscription on its opening day.
