India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first against New Zealand in the third T20 International at Henry Stadium on Tuesday.
Looking to take control of the series in dynamic conditions, India decided to keep faith in their winning combination by fielding an unchanged Playing XI. Young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to hold the crucial No. 3 spot in the batting lineup. Meanwhile, dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan remains sidelined for another game as he continues his recovery from a groin injury.
Explaining his decision to bowl first at the toss, Shreyas emphasised the importance of adjusting quickly to the unique environment and boundaries of the venue.
“We are going to bowl. Certain aspects we definitely need to keep improving. The dimensions and conditions are different, so the quicker we adapt, the better for us. A lot of players are pretty mature to understand when they are not starting. Same team for us,” said the Indian skipper.
On the other hand, New Zealand made three strategic modifications to their starting lineup. With upcoming ODI and Test series against India on the horizon, the Kiwi team management opted to manage the workload of their key fast bowlers.
Injured pacers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson missed out on selection, while Nathan Smith was also omitted. In their place, the hosts handed opportunities to Matthew Fisher, Kyle Jamieson, and Adam Milne to reinforce their pace attack.
With a fresh pitch and challenging wind conditions in Wellington, India’s bowlers will aim to make early inroads before setting their sights on a manageable chase.
