Tensions flared in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Friday after authorities cancelled student union elections at two higher educational institutions following widespread student indiscipline.
The elections, originally scheduled to take place across all colleges and universities in Odisha on October 15, were called off at Bhadrak Women’s College and Naami College in Bhandaripokhari. College management cites severe breaches of campus discipline by student groups as the reason for scrapping the democratic process.
Outrage on Campus
The sudden cancellation triggered immediate outrage among students at Bhadrak Women’s College, who took to the streets to voice their opposition to the administration’s verdict. Protesters argued that a blanket cancellation unfairly penalises the general student body for the actions of a few disruptive individuals.
Fearing escalation and potential law-and-order disruptions, district authorities dispatched police personnel to the campus. Security remains heightened around both institutions to prevent any untoward incidents during the nomination window.
Election Process Underway Elsewhere
The dramatic developments unfold on the key filing day for candidate nominations across the state. Under the official schedule announced by the state government, prospective candidates are permitted to file their nomination papers between 10 AM and 1 PM today, October 9.
The initial list of valid candidate nominations will be published later today at 5 PM. While nomination procedures continue as scheduled across the remaining educational institutions in Odisha, normal academic and electoral activities remain suspended at the two affected Bhadrak colleges.
