Trump Confuses Brazil for India: Claims 125 Million Voted in 'India’s Presidential Election'

US President Donald Trump sparked widespread social media reaction on Monday after seemingly confusing Brazil with India while commenting on a recent major overseas election.

In a post published on Truth Social, Trump claimed that 125 million people had cast their ballots in the “first round” of India’s presidential election, before using the figure to criticize the speed and integrity of vote counting in the United States.

”125 Million People voted today in the first round of India’s Presidential Election,” Trump wrote in the post. He went on to contrast the fast turnarounds in foreign elections with US cities and states like Detroit, Philadelphia, and California, where he claimed results take weeks to calculate. He concluded his message by declaring, “Voting in America is CORRUPT!!!” and signing off as “President DJT”.

While Trump did not name South America in his post, his timeline and figures directly mirror the first round of Brazil’s presidential election held on Sunday, October 4. Approximately 124.5 million out of Brazil’s nearly 159 million registered voters cast their ballots in that election—a figure closely matching the 125 million cited in his post.

In contrast, Trump’s post contains multiple factual inaccuracies regarding India:

  • No Direct Popular Vote: India does not elect its president through a nationwide popular vote. The Indian head of state is chosen by an Electoral College consisting of elected members of Parliament and state legislative assemblies.
  • No Ongoing Election: India’s current President, Droupadi Murmu, took office in July 2022 to serve a five-year term, meaning no presidential election was scheduled or taking place on October 5, 2026.

Sunday’s election in Brazil produced a closely contested outcome, setting up a runoff between incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

With the vote count nearly complete, Flávio Bolsonaro led the field with roughly 47% of the valid votes against Lula’s 45%. Because neither candidate secured an absolute majority, the election now moves to a high-stakes second-round vote scheduled for October 25.

Flávio Bolsonaro remains a key international ally of Trump, with his political platform pledging closer strategic ties between Washington and Brasília. Despite the geopolitical importance of the Brazilian election, Trump’s online commentary drew widespread attention for conflating two of the world’s largest democracies.
