18 Dead Elephants Found In Assam; Suspected To Be Killed In Lightning Strike

Assam: At least 18 wild elephants were found dead on a hill along the border of Assam’s Nagaon-Karbi Anglong district on Thursday.

The sources said a search operation has been launched in the area and the actual reason and number of elephants killed will be known in due course.

The incident took place in Kandoli Proposed Reserved Forest (PRF) in Kathiatoli range of Nagaon forest Division.

Preliminary investigation into the deaths by the forest department has revealed that the wild elephants could have been killed in lighting strikes.

Chief Wildlife Warden and DFO (district forest officer) of Nagaon district were also dispatched to the area to conduct an investigation to ascertain what led to the deaths of the 18 wild elephants.

Locals were also seen paying their respects to the fallen tuskers.

Assam Forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya mourned the death of 18 wild elephants.

Minister Suklabaidya said he would visit the site with PCCF (Wildlife) and other officials on Friday morning to take stock of the situation at the direction of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
