Kantabanji in Balangir district observed a 12-hour shutdown on Tuesday as residents and local organisations protested against the government’s alleged neglect of regional development.
The Truck Owners’ Association led the bandh, demanding action on 15 key issues affecting the constituency.
Protesters gathered at Indira Chhak and blocked traffic, halting all vehicular movement. Shops and markets remained closed throughout the day, while emergency services continued to operate. The bandh received support from all political parties and local bodies, including the Nagar Palika, Bar Association, Hemal Association, and business groups.
The demonstrators submitted a memorandum through Tehsildar Bishwanath Khalkho, addressed to the Chief Minister. The demands included establishing an engineering college, nursing college, agricultural university, sainik school, and law college in Kantabanji. They also sought the upgrade of the local CHC hospital to a 100-bed SDH facility, conversion of the NAC into a municipality, and creation of permanent offices for the sub-registrar, RTO camp, and assistant labor department.
Residents accused the “double-engine government” of ignoring Kantabanji’s development needs. They said the region deserves better infrastructure and educational institutions to match its growing population and economic potential.
