A violent attack shocked Burla town in Sambalpur district when six men assaulted a youth with sharp weapons over an old rivalry.
The incident occurred near Jagannath Temple Square on Sunday evening.
Police said the victim, identified as Biki Ray (24), was walking near Saraswati Sishu Mandir when the group surrounded him and attacked with knives and cleavers. Witnesses reported that the attackers struck repeatedly, leaving Biki bleeding heavily and unconscious. Locals rushed him to VIMSAR Medical College, where doctors treated multiple deep wounds on his head and body.
Investigators revealed that the assault stemmed from previous enmity between Biki and the accused. The attackers fled immediately after the assault, triggering panic in the area. Police launched a manhunt and began raids to trace the suspects.
Burla police confirmed that Biki has several criminal cases pending against him. Officers suspect the attack was a revenge strike linked to earlier disputes. The brutality of the assault and its occurrence in a public place have created fear among residents.
Authorities deployed patrol teams across Burla to prevent further violence. Senior officers visited the hospital and assured strict action against the culprits. The investigation continues, with police collecting CCTV footage and eyewitness statements.
