Eggs, hailed as a complete and nutrient-rich food, emerged as the star of the day during Odisha’s state-level observance of World Egg Day. Described as the cheapest source of animal protein, eggs serve as a cornerstone for children’s health and rural economic growth, according to Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event held at the Local Services Bhawan Convention Centre, organised by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department, Minister Mallik emphasised Odisha’s growing prowess in egg production. “Odisha will become the power centre for egg production,” he declared, underscoring the state’s commitment to boosting output and achieving self-sufficiency.
Currently, the state produces around 1.17 crore eggs daily, translating to an annual figure of 372 crore eggs. However, with a per capita availability of just 80 eggs—far below the recommended 182 for optimal health—Mallik set a bold target: scaling production to 500 crore eggs annually by 2029. To realise this vision, he urged young entrepreneurs across every block and district to step forward and invest in poultry farming, fostering local self-reliance and economic opportunities.
The event also featured insights from key dignitaries. Prabhata Kumar Raul, Vice-Chancellor of the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), echoed the call for self-reliance, pledging institutional support to make Odisha a poultry powerhouse. Additional Secretary Rina Mahapatra shed light on government schemes aimed at supporting farmers and producers. Vijay Amruta Kulange, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, delivered the welcome address, while Additional Director Hadibandhu Bhui extended thanks to participants.
Observed annually on the second Friday of October, World Egg Day aims to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of eggs and promote increased production. This year’s theme, “Powerful Eggs: Full of Natural Nutrition,” resonated throughout the celebrations, highlighting eggs’ role in providing essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Beyond the main event, outreach efforts extended to schools and communities. Awareness programs on eggs’ health benefits were conducted in several Bhubaneswar schools, including Unit-1, Unit-2, Unit-9, CRP School, and Capital High School, engaging students in interactive sessions. Additionally, the department distributed eggs to residents of various orphanages in the city, ensuring underprivileged children benefit from this vital food source.
As Odisha ramps up its poultry ambitions, initiatives like these not only nourish bodies but also empower communities, positioning the state as a leader in sustainable animal husbandry.
