At least eight passengers sustained serious injuries after a government-run bus overturned at the Salur bypass in Malkangiri district in the early hours of Sunday.

The bus, operated by the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC), was travelling from MV-79 in Odisha to Visakhapatnam when the accident occurred at around 3 am.

31 On Board at Time of Accident

According to preliminary reports, a total of 31 people were on board, including 29 passengers, the driver and a staff member. Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the spot soon after the mishap.

Authorities confirmed that the injured passengers were immediately shifted for medical attention.

Steering Lock Suspected

Initial findings suggest that the accident may have occurred after the bus steering reportedly locked while the vehicle was negotiating a turn.

Sources indicated that the bus was descending a ghat road and attempting a U-turn when the driver allegedly lost control. However, officials said the exact cause will be determined only after a detailed technical inspection and investigation.

Injured Undergoing Treatment

The eight seriously injured passengers were admitted to a government hospital in Vizianagaram for treatment. Some of them were later discharged after receiving primary care, while others remain under medical supervision.

Other passengers received assistance from local residents and the Andhra Pradesh Police to continue their onward journey safely.

Preliminary information indicates that most, if not all, of the passengers were residents of Odisha.

Investigation Underway

Police and local authorities have reached the accident site and initiated an inquiry into the incident. Officials said further details will be shared once the investigation progresses.
