Devotees in large numbers visited prominent Shaiva shrines across Odisha on Sunday as the state observed the sacred festival of Maha Shivratri. From early morning, people from diverse communities gathered peacefully to offer prayers, light lamps, and participate in rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Authorities implemented comprehensive security and traffic management measures to ensure a safe and smooth darshan experience for all.

Elaborate Arrangements at Lingaraj Temple

At the historic Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, one of the most revered Shiva shrines in eastern India, the sacred ‘Mahadeepa’ ritual is scheduled to be held at 10 pm.

Anticipating the presence of lakhs of devotees, the Commissionerate Police deployed 41 platoons of security personnel and around 200 officers in and around the temple premises. Senior officials reviewed crowd control, surveillance, and traffic diversion plans ahead of the celebrations. Authorities also warned of strict action against the use of fake entry passes to maintain order and fairness in access.

Security Tightened at Lokanath Temple

In Puri, extensive arrangements were made for the Maha Shivratri celebrations, locally known as Jagar Jatra, at the Lokanath Temple. The district police deployed five platoons to facilitate orderly darshan and manage the steady flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine.

Officials ensured that security personnel were stationed at key entry and exit points to prevent overcrowding and ensure a comfortable experience for families, elderly visitors, and persons with disabilities.

Preparations Complete at Dhabaleswar Temple

At Dhabaleswar Temple in Cuttack district, preparations were finalized well in advance. The ‘Mahadeepa’ ritual is scheduled to be observed at 1 am. Local authorities coordinated with temple management committees to regulate queues and maintain safety standards.

Devotional Spirit Across Odisha

Apart from these major shrines, significant gatherings were also reported at Kapilas Temple, where devotees began arriving before dawn.

Across the state, the administration focused on inclusive access, enhanced public safety, and smooth conduct of rituals. Devotees expressed satisfaction with the arrangements, describing the atmosphere as spiritual, organized, and welcoming.

Maha Shivratri, one of the most important Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva, continues to draw thousands of worshippers each year to Odisha’s historic temples.
