A woman swept away by sudden floodwaters in a jungle stream near Birikot village was recovered after four days by the fire brigade in Ganjam district.

Ambi Nayak, 52, from Birikot village under Bhanjanagar police limits, went missing on Wednesday while passing near the jungle stream. The area, known for its remote terrain and wildlife presence, became dangerous after heavy rains triggered flash floods.

Upon receiving the report, the ODRAF team, fire brigade, Bhanjanagar tehsildar Abhispa Pattnaik, BDO Bharati Devi, and other administrative officials rushed to the site. Despite continuous search operations, strong currents and floating debris obstructed rescue efforts. The presence of wild elephants near the stream further discouraged locals from assisting.

The fire brigade continued the search relentlessly. On Saturday, officials discovered Ambi Nayak’s body lodged beneath a large rock about four kilometers from her village. The fire brigade retrieved the body and confirmed the identity.

The incident highlights the challenges faced during jungle stream rescue operations. Officials noted that large trees carried by the current and the rugged terrain delayed recovery. The fire brigade emphasized the importance of timely alerts and coordinated efforts in such emergencies.

This tragic event underscores the need for improved safety measures in flood-prone jungle areas. Rescue teams demonstrated commitment and courage in navigating natural obstacles and wildlife threats to complete the operation.
