A shocking tragedy unfolded in Sambalpur district when a woman threw her two young daughters into a well and then set herself ablaze.
The incident occurred in Jarabaga Sargidihi village under the Bamara block.
The woman, identified as Sanju Madaki, killed her six-year-old daughter Suhana and her four-month-old infant before running to a nearby field and setting herself on fire. Family members rushed to the well and pulled the children out, but doctors at Gobindapur hospital declared them dead. Police later seized Sanju’s body and sent it for autopsy.
Investigators from Gobindapur police station and a scientific team reached the site and began inquiries. Relatives revealed that Sanju had been struggling with mental instability for several months. On Friday afternoon, she disappeared with her daughters, raising no suspicion among family members. Hours later, she returned alone and admitted to her husband James that she had thrown the children into the well.
Police officials, including Kuchinda SDPO Pradeep Kumar Das, confirmed that the motive remains unclear. They suspect marital discord may have triggered the incident. The deaths of the two children and their mother have left the village in shock, with authorities promising a thorough investigation.
