Despite the complete withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from Odisha on October 15, active easterly winds and an upper-air trough line over the Bay of Bengal continue to trigger rainfall across several coastal and southern districts, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.
Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, confirmed that these weather systems will remain active over the state for the next two days, bringing light to moderate showers to coastal and southern regions.
Yellow Warning Issued for South Odisha
The Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning for October 17 and 18, predicting heavy rainfall in isolated places across Koraput district. Additionally, districts including Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam are expected to experience lightning, thunderstorm activity, and gusty surface winds reaching up to 40 km/h.
While southern and coastal pockets will witness frequent spells, northern Odisha is likely to see comparatively minimal rainfall. Weather conditions across the state are expected to gradually clear up after October 19.
Fresh Weather System Likely by Late October
Meanwhile, eminent meteorologist Dr. Surendranath Pasupalak indicated that a new cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjacent Andaman Sea between October 22 and 24. This system could intensify into a low-pressure area around October 25 or 26.
“It is too early to predict the precise intensity or movement of the prospective system,” Dr. Pasupalak noted. He advised keeping a close watch on the Bay of Bengal towards the end of the month.
Clear Skies Ahead for Dussehra and Kumar Purnima
On a positive note for festive celebrations, night temperatures in interior and hilly districts will begin to dip gradually. Weather conditions are predicted to turn largely dry and favorable starting October 19, offering relief for upcoming Dussehra and Kumar Purnima festivities.
