Bhubaneswar: In yet another case of suicide, a woman ended her life by jumping into the River Mahanadi at Jobra Barrage in Cuttack on Sunday evening.
According to sources, some fishermen spotted the woman jumping into the river and rushed to her rescue. They managed to pull out the woman from the strong currents in the river and took her to the SCBMCH. However, the doctors declared the woman dead.
The deceased woman has been identified as Kamini Swain of Cuttack’s Arilo area.
Sources said, Kamini came to Jobra barrage this afternoon and was standing on the bridge for some time. Later, she dumped her vanity bag and sandals on the bridge and jumped into the river.
It is pertinent to mention here that this is the fourth such incident in the last five days, while the bodies of three others are yet to be recovered.
On Wednesday morning, Mamata Sahu, a teacher in Cuttack’s Odia Bazar, left her scooter on the bridge and jumped into the river. Despite searches, she is yet to be traced.
On that day, Tushar Bhatt, a businessman from Bhubaneswar, jumped from the Trisulia bridge into the Kathajodi River. It is said that he suffered financial losses in online trading and was debt-ridden, following which he took the extreme step. His body is yet to be recovered.
Also, one Manoj Behera of Cuttack Khannagar area jumped into the Kathajodi river on Friday night and is still missing. The youth was travelling in an auto rickshaw with his mother when he suddenly got down and jumped into the river
On Friday morning, a youth who had jumped into the Mahanadi river from Chaunrapur bridge in Sambalpur was rescued by Fire Services personnel.
