A shocking incident of domestic violence has been reported from the Barkot police station area in Deogarh district.

Police said a man allegedly beat his wife to death late Friday night near Baghamari forest, close to the IRB battalion at Bamparda.

The victim, identified as 45-year-old Manju Behera, had been living with her second husband, Ajit Behera of Pabitranagar village of Angul district, for the past one and a half years after the death of her first husband. The couple reportedly survived by begging.

On Friday night, after having dinner, the couple took shelter in the forest. A quarrel broke out between them, during which Ajit allegedly assaulted Manju with a stick, leading to her death. He later carried the body some distance away and abandoned it.

Police recovered the body on Saturday morning after Ajit himself revealed details of the crime in the village. Barkot police detained him for questioning and registered a murder case. Additional SP and local police officers reached the spot, and a scientific team has been called in to assist the investigation.
