A well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours, triggering a spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha through May 31.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts for the state as monsoon activity gains momentum.
According to IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Odisha is likely to receive above-normal rainfall in June, with the southwest monsoon expected to arrive in the state within the next two to three days. The system’s rapid intensification is aiding the monsoon’s early onset.
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for five districts — Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Cuttack, Koraput, and Rayagada — indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The remaining 25 districts are under a Yellow Alert, urging residents to stay vigilant.
Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, confirmed, “Conditions are now favourable for the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Odisha. Entire Odisha will receive rainfall on Wednesday.”
In response, the Odisha government has placed all district administrations on high alert. The Special Relief Commissioner’s Office has instructed local authorities to stay prepared for any weather-related emergencies and to report any damage from storms, lightning, hail, or heavy rainfall immediately.
Additionally, the IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into deep sea areas from May 29 to June 1 due to rough weather conditions.
