Odisha has surged ahead in India’s rooftop solar journey, climbing from 13th to 7th position nationally under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, according to MNRE data.
The state has crossed 1.74 lakh rooftop solar installations, surpassing the 1.5 lakh milestone, with over 3.12 lakh applications received.
The rapid growth reflects strong government subsidies, Tata Power‑led discom facilitation, vendor ecosystem expansion, and grassroots mobilisation. Odisha has moved ahead of Madhya Pradesh and Assam, reinforcing its role as a model for decentralised clean‑energy adoption.
Applications rose by nearly 60% in recent months, while installations grew by over 130%. The conversion rate improved from 37.1% to 53.4%, highlighting streamlined processes from application to commissioning.
Eligible households can now avail combined Central and State support of up to ₹1.38 lakh for a 3 kWp system. Odisha has set a target of 3 lakh installations by 2027, with discoms TPCODL, TPWODL, TPNODL and TPSODL playing pivotal roles in execution.
Campaigns like “Mo Chhata, Mo Sanchaya”, Surya Ghar Gram Sabhas, the Solar Rath outreach, and the Solar Didi initiative have further deepened consumer engagement, making rooftop solar accessible across urban, rural and semi‑urban households.
Districts such as Baleshwar (16,069), Ganjam (15,301), Khordha (14,236) and Cuttack (13,343) have crossed the 10,000‑installation mark, together contributing ~143 MWp capacity.
Officials said Odisha’s rise demonstrates how strong policy support, attractive consumer economics and utility‑led execution can accelerate renewable adoption at scale.
