In a swift and successful trap operation, Odisha Vigilance today caught Sushil Kumar Singh, Junior Engineer of Badasahi Block in Mayurbhanj district, while he was allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 32,000 from a Mate working under the MGNREGA scheme.
The accused JE was nabbed while receiving the bribe for clearing the final bill of a morum/metal road construction work worth Rs 5 lakh executed in a Gram Panchayat under Badasahi Block.
According to the complaint, the Mate — who had supervised the execution of the road project — had been repeatedly requesting Singh for the past couple of months to process and release the final bill.
Singh allegedly demanded Rs 32,000 (nearly 7% of the project cost) as bribe. When the Mate expressed his inability to pay the amount, the JE reportedly insisted on taking the bribe. Left with no alternative, the Mate approached Odisha Vigilance and lodged a complaint. A trap was laid immediately.
Today, a Vigilance team apprehended Singh while he was accepting the bribe money. The entire tainted amount of Rs 32,000 has been recovered from his possession and seized.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches are underway at three locations linked to the accused to investigate possible Disproportionate Assets (DA).
A case has been registered at Baleshwar Vigilance Police Station as Case No. 10/2026 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Investigation is in progress.
