India’s Veer Chotrani scripted a remarkable comeback to defeat compatriot Abhay Singh in a five-game thriller at the 2026 World Squash Championships in Giza, Egypt.
World No. 45 Chotrani overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat India’s top-ranked player and World No. 22 Abhay Singh 3-2 (14-12, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-2) at the Palm Hills Club and PGC Golf Central Mall. The victory marked Chotrani’s second win over Abhay in three meetings and earned him a spot in the second round against defending champion and World No. 1 Mostafa Asal of Egypt.
The match began with Chotrani edging a tense first game 14-12. Abhay responded strongly, taking the next two games 11-8 and 11-5. Chotrani then shifted gears, tightening his control and forcing errors to win the fourth game 11-7. In the decider, he dominated from start to finish, closing the match 11-2 to complete a stunning turnaround.
India’s four-member contingent in Giza includes Ramit Tandon, Velavan Senthilkumar, Abhay Singh, and Chotrani. Velavan will face World No. 5 Victor Crouin of France, while Tandon meets Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey in his opening match.
