In a major push to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, the Odisha government is set to roll out a dedicated digital prescription application under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

The new feature, integrated into Arogya Setu 2.0, will help track prescriptions, especially antibiotics, and maintain secure digital records of patients’ medication history.

Health Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling announced the initiative, noting that people often consume antibiotics for common ailments such as fever, cold, or mild infections—even when not required. “We are living in a digital age, and the Prime Minister has given strong emphasis on digital solutions. The digital prescription programme will be launched very soon. The department is making all necessary preparations,” the minister said.

The app will create a digital trail of every prescription: which doctor prescribed which medicine, for how many days, and how frequently a patient has taken antibiotics. A convenient “scan and share” feature will allow instant access to a patient’s complete medication history, with all data stored securely in a digital locker.

Currently, both self-medication and over-prescription of antibiotics for routine infections are causing unnecessary financial burden and health risks for patients. Once the system is fully operational, doctors will face greater accountability, making it harder to prescribe antibiotics without clear medical necessity. Easy access to a patient’s prior treatment records will also enable more informed clinical decisions in subsequent consultations.

Officials believe the move will significantly reduce irrational antibiotic use, protect patients from side effects, and contribute to the national fight against drug-resistant infections.
