A simmering personal dispute rooted in a decade-long relationship ended in tragedy on Sunday when a 27-year-old woman was killed in her home in Nahada village under Gangpur police station limits in Belaguntha block of Ganjam district.
The victim, identified as Minati Pradhan, was attacked inside her house on the afternoon of August 23. Her former partner, Sujit Biswal, 37, has been arrested after he surrendered at Gangpur police station following the incident.
According to information available, Minati and Sujit had been in a relationship for nearly 11 years. Around a decade ago, the pair left their homes together and returned about a year and a half later. At that time, Minati had not yet reached marriageable age, and Sujit’s family reportedly declined to accept the match, saying a wedding could take place only after she attained majority.
Sujit later moved to Surat, where he was involved in a murder case and served a prison sentence. Upon returning to the village recently, he proposed marriage to Minati. She is said to have rejected the proposal, citing his criminal past. This rejection allegedly angered Sujit and led to the fatal confrontation.
This morning, Minati’s father had gone to the fields. She spent time at her maternal uncle’s house until around 3 pm before returning home. Sujit is reported to have entered the house and attacked her with a knife, resulting in her death.
When her father returned and discovered the body, he alerted Gangpur police. The accused subsequently surrendered at the police station and was taken into custody.
As of the latest reports, Minati’s body remains at the residence under police guard. A scientific team is expected to visit the scene on Sunday for examination, after which the body will be sent for post-mortem. Gangpur police are continuing their investigation into the case.
