Emphasizing the vital role of value-based education, Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati stated that it plays a pivotal role in shaping a peaceful and progressive society. The Governor was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on “Value-Based Education for Teachers” organized by Ramakrishna Mission at the Vivekananda Hall in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
In his address, the Governor highlighted the significant responsibility of teachers in nurturing not just knowledge but also character among students. He urged educators to focus on holistic development, inspiring students to become individuals of strong moral fiber.
Quoting Swami Vivekananda, Dr. Kambhampati said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” He described education as not merely the accumulation of information, but the manifestation of inner perfection, strength, and character.
The Governor commended the Ramakrishna Mission for its outstanding contributions to education, social service, and spiritual awakening. Inspired by the ideals of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda, the Mission has consistently promoted a balanced education system that integrates intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth, he noted.
Reflecting on India’s rich civilizational heritage, the Governor observed that Indian values are deeply rooted in truth, righteousness, peace, love, and non-violence. These are not mere ideals but principles meant to be practiced in everyday life.
Referring to the prevailing global scenario marked by conflict and instability, Dr. Kambhampati stressed the urgent need to promote understanding, tolerance, and dialogue. He described teachers as nation-builders and torchbearers who shape young minds through guidance and personal example.
Teachers should inspire students to be fearless in thought, compassionate in action, and committed to the service of humanity, he added. Even a single transformed individual can contribute meaningfully to social change, the Governor remarked.
He further emphasized that value education should not be limited to textbooks but must be lived and experienced in daily life. Teachers must continuously strive for self-improvement, while institutions should create an environment that fosters ethics, social responsibility, and a spirit of service.
“True national strength lies not only in economic progress but in the character of its citizens,” the Governor asserted.
Among others, Swami Bodhamayananda, Secretary of Ramakrishna Math, Hyderabad, delivered a motivational address. Swami Atmaprabananda, Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Bhubaneswar, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Chandi Das, President of the Mission, proposed the vote of thanks.
