Umar Khalid Moves Delhi High Court After Bail Setback In Delhi Riots Case, Hearing Likely Tomorrow

Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid has moved the Delhi High Court seeking interim bail in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case after facing a setback from a lower court earlier this week.

According to reports, the matter is likely to come up for hearing tomorrow.

Khalid had earlier requested 15 days of interim bail to attend the Chehlum, the 40th day mourning ceremony of his late uncle, and to visit his mother, who is scheduled to undergo surgery. However, a Delhi court rejected his application, prompting him to challenge the decision before the High Court.

The latest development has once again brought attention to the long-running Delhi riots conspiracy case, in which Khalid has remained in custody since 2020 under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Why Umar Khalid Sought Interim Bail

In his plea, Khalid cited urgent family circumstances. His legal team argued that he should be granted temporary relief on humanitarian grounds so he could attend the religious ceremony of his deceased uncle and support his mother during her medical treatment.

The lower court, however, declined the request, leading Khalid to approach the High Court for relief.

Delhi Riots Case Continues To Draw Attention

The 2020 Delhi riots case remains one of the most closely watched legal matters in the country. Several activists, students, and political figures were booked in connection with the violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020.

Khalid has consistently denied all allegations against him.

With the Delhi High Court now expected to hear the matter, all eyes will be on whether the court grants interim relief in view of the personal and medical grounds cited in the plea.
