The deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal has begun crossing the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The system moved northwestwards at a speed of about 5 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred near latitude 18.2°N and longitude 83.9°E, over the north Andhra Pradesh coast. It was located approximately 30 km west-southwest of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 80 km northeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).
According to the IMD, the deep depression is crossing the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to the southwest of Kalingapatnam. The leading edge of the system has already entered land, and the landfall process is expected to continue for the next two hours.
After completing landfall, the system is very likely to move northwestwards while maintaining the intensity of a deep depression for the next 12 hours. Thereafter, it is expected to recurve north-northwestwards and weaken gradually over the subsequent 24 hours.
Residents in coastal districts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha are advised to remain vigilant and follow official updates and advisories from the IMD and state disaster management authorities as the system interacts with land.
