In a poignant display of governmental compassion and swift coordination, the mortal remains of A. Ramaya, a young man from Ganjam district’s Madhabandha village, were brought back to Odisha on Thursday after he tragically lost his life in a drone attack in Russia.
Ramaya, who was working with a company in Russia, became an unintended victim of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. On May 17, he was killed in a drone strike while in Moscow. The devastating news left his family in shock and despair, prompting them to appeal to the state and central governments for help in bringing his body home.
Responding with urgency and empathy, the Ministry of External Affairs (Government of India), the Odisha Government, the Odisha Paribar Directorate under the Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture, the state’s Resident Commissioner’s office in New Delhi, and the Ganjam district administration joined hands to make the repatriation possible in record time.
The body arrived at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar today, where Special Duty Officer Pritish Panda of the Odisha Paribar Directorate personally oversaw all arrangements. From the airport, the mortal remains were immediately dispatched to Ramaya’s ancestral village in Ganjam district, where grieving family members and villagers await to pay their last respects.
This successful operation highlights the Odisha government’s commitment to supporting its diaspora in times of crisis. For the family, the return of their loved one brings a measure of closure after days of uncertainty and pain.
As the people of Madhabandha prepare to bid farewell to their son, the incident also serves as a sobering reminder of the human cost of distant conflicts that continue to claim innocent lives far from home.
