Twisha Sharma Death Case

The investigation into the death of Twisha Sharma took a major turn on Friday after a Bhopal district court granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) five-day custody of former judge Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of the deceased.

The court also extended the CBI custody of Twisha Sharma’s husband, Samarth Singh, by another five days as investigators continue probing allegations linked to the suspected dowry death case.

Giribala Singh Arrested After Bail Cancellation

Giribala Singh was arrested a day earlier after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled her anticipatory bail in the case. According to reports, her lawyer did not oppose the CBI’s request for custodial interrogation during Friday’s hearing.

Samarth Singh, Twisha Sharma’s husband, had already been in custody before the latest court order.

The case has drawn national attention because Giribala Singh previously served as a district judge, adding legal and public significance to the investigation.

What Is the Twisha Sharma Case?

Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, died on May 12, just months after marrying Bhopal resident Samarth Singh in December 2025.

Following her death, Twisha’s family accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and mental cruelty. The allegations led to the registration of a criminal case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

The accused face charges related to dowry death, cruelty towards a married woman and criminal acts carried out with common intention.

Charges Against Giribala Singh

Investigators have booked Giribala Singh under multiple legal provisions, including:

  • Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for dowry death
  • Section 85 for cruelty by husband or relatives
  • Section 3(5) related to common intention
  • Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act

The CBI is expected to question both Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh further during the custody period.

Supreme Court Monitoring Case

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation and handle the matter on priority.

The apex court also advised both the victim’s family and the accused persons not to make public comments that could influence the ongoing investigation.

Officials said the probe is continuing and more evidence is being examined to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death.

The case has reignited conversations around dowry harassment, women’s safety and accountability within influential families.
