Eastern China is reeling from the impact of Typhoon Saudel, which unleashed torrential rains, mudslides, and flooding across multiple provinces.
A mudslide in Suichuan County, Jiangxi, killed two people and left ten missing after collapsing a dozen houses. Rescuers rushed to relocate residents to safer ground, pulling survivors from debris while continuing search operations.
State broadcaster CCTV confirmed that one of the missing was later found dead among collapsed homes. In Hunan province, two more fatalities were reported following landslides triggered by heavy downpours.
Saudel made multiple landfalls in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, where more than 100 houses collapsed in Putian city’s Huating Town. A breached dike flooded villages, trapping residents and forcing authorities to deploy inflatable boats.
Authorities reported that 600,000 residents were evacuated from vulnerable areas in Fujian, as images showed streets turned into rivers. The disaster underscores the growing risks posed by typhoons in China’s coastal and inland regions.
