A wild elephant strayed onto the busy Biju Expressway near Kalunga–Goibhanga on Sunday, prompting forest officials and locals to guide it back toward the forest.
During the process, the tusker moved toward a roadside canal, creating panic among residents.
Eyewitnesses reported that the elephant appeared trapped in the drain and was struggling to climb out. However, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Jashabanta Sethi clarified that the tusker had not fallen but was bathing, and assured that its health remains stable. He emphasised that the animal is old and must be given safe passage without disturbance.
Forest officials have begun preparations for a rescue operation, arranging JCB machines and other equipment to ensure the elephant can be guided out safely. The local administration and police have been alerted to control crowds near the site.
