US President Donald Trump is expected to decide within the next 10 days whether to invoke sanctions provisions that could impact nations purchasing Russian oil and gas, including India, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor stated on Thursday.
Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Gor clarified that the legislation—which passed the US Senate with strong 86-vote bipartisan support—gives the President statutory authority to penalise importers of Russian energy or entities aiding sanctions evasion.
Emphasising that the measures are not aimed at targeting any specific nation, Gor noted, “The goal is not to punish anyone. The goal is to try to bring an end to this war.” Under the law, Trump must issue a formal determination within 30 days of its passage, though no penalties have been enforced so far.
Amid concerns over potential tariff impacts, Gor expressed optimism regarding broader strategic and economic relations. He disclosed that long-running US-India trade negotiations have progressed rapidly, with major framework items already finalised.
Highlighting key growth pillars including defence, semiconductor manufacturing, data centres, and artificial intelligence, Gor emphasised that American technology partnerships with Indian enterprise offer a strategic “win-win” for both economies.
