A sore throat, cough or temporary change in voice is usually caused by a viral infection, allergies, acid reflux or vocal strain. These problems often improve within a few days. However, throat cancer symptoms may initially resemble common throat conditions. A persistent sore throat, unexplained hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or a neck lump that lasts more than two weeks should be medically evaluated, particularly when symptoms are worsening or not responding to routine treatment.

Understanding Throat Cancer

“Throat cancer” is a general term used for cancers that develop in different parts of the throat. These may include the pharynx, which connects the nose and mouth to the oesophagus; the tonsils and base of the tongue within the oropharynx; and the larynx, or voice box. These cancers are classified as head and neck cancers, although their symptoms and treatment can differ depending on the precise location.

Important risk factors include tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption and certain viral infections, particularly human papillomavirus, or HPV. Epstein–Barr virus, or EBV, is associated with some nasopharyngeal cancers.

Early Throat Cancer Symptoms to Watch For

Possible early throat cancer symptoms include:

● Persistent sore throat: Throat discomfort that does not improve with standard treatment.
● Hoarseness: A change in voice quality that continues without a clear cause.
● Difficulty swallowing: Food may feel stuck, or swallowing may become painful.
● A neck or throat lump: Any unexplained swelling should be examined.
● Persistent earache: Throat problems can sometimes cause pain that is felt in one ear.
● Ongoing cough: Particularly when it is not linked to a known infection.
● Unequal tonsils: One tonsil that remains noticeably larger, especially with pain, a neck lump or swallowing difficulty, requires assessment.

These symptoms are frequently caused by non-cancerous conditions, but persistence is an important reason to seek medical advice.

Late-Stage Throat Cancer Symptoms

Symptoms alone cannot determine the stage of cancer. However, certain symptoms may occur as a tumour grows or affects nearby structures:

● A persistent or painless lump in the neck
● Increasing difficulty or pain while swallowing
● Significant or unexplained weight loss
● A cough that does not resolve
● Blood in the saliva or coughed-up mucus
● Progressive hoarseness or other voice changes
● Shortness of breath or noisy breathing
● Increasing ear or throat pain
● Persistent nasal blockage, nosebleeds or hearing changes in cancers affecting the nasopharynx

A neck lump can sometimes be an early presentation rather than a late symptom. Proper staging requires examination, imaging and biopsy rather than assessment based on symptoms alone.

Causes and Risk Factors of Throat Cancer

Throat cancer develops when cells acquire changes that allow them to grow abnormally. Factors that increase risk include:

● Smoking and tobacco: Cigarettes, bidis, cigars, chewing tobacco and other tobacco products increase the risk of several head and neck cancers.
● Alcohol: Heavy or frequent alcohol consumption increases risk, particularly when combined with tobacco.
● HPV infection: Certain high-risk HPV types are associated with cancers of the tonsils and base of the tongue.
● EBV infection: EBV is linked with some nasopharyngeal cancers.
● Combined exposure: Using tobacco and alcohol together may create a substantially greater risk than either exposure alone.

Having a risk factor does not mean that a person will definitely develop cancer, and throat cancer can also occur in people without traditional risk factors.

When Should You See a Throat Cancer Specialist in Pune?

Consider consulting a throat cancer specialist in Pune when a sore throat, voice change, cough, earache or swallowing difficulty persists for more than two weeks, worsens or fails to improve with appropriate treatment. An unexplained neck lump, blood in the saliva, increasing breathlessness or significant weight loss also requires prompt evaluation.

People who smoke, chew tobacco, consume alcohol heavily or have had previous head and neck cancer should be particularly careful about persistent symptoms. Seeking specialist advice does not mean that cancer is present. It allows infections, reflux, vocal-cord conditions and other possible causes to be distinguished from a potentially serious illness.

Diagnostic Procedures for Throat Cancer

A specialist may recommend the following investigations:

Clinical Examination

The doctor examines the mouth, throat, tonsils, tongue and neck and asks about symptoms, tobacco exposure and medical history.

Endoscopy

A thin flexible camera may be passed through the nose to examine the throat and voice box. This procedure helps identify abnormal areas that may not be visible during a routine examination.

Biopsy

A tissue sample is required to confirm whether an abnormal growth is cancerous. The sample is examined by a pathologist.

Imaging

CT, MRI or PET-CT scans may be used to assess the size and location of a tumour and determine whether it has affected lymph nodes or other structures.

Living with Throat Cancer: Support and Care

Throat cancer and its treatment may affect speech, swallowing, nutrition, breathing and appearance. Care may therefore involve more than surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Speech and swallowing therapy can help patients communicate and eat more safely. Dietitians may recommend high-protein foods, modified food textures or temporary nutritional support when swallowing becomes difficult. Dental care is also important, especially before radiation treatment involving the mouth or throat.

Emotional support, pain management, rehabilitation and regular follow-up can help patients and their families manage treatment-related changes. Any new breathing difficulty, dehydration, fever or inability to swallow should be reported to the treating team promptly.

Prevention Tips to Reduce Throat Cancer Risk

While every case cannot be prevented, risk may be reduced by:

● Stopping smoking and avoiding all forms of tobacco
● Avoiding or limiting alcohol consumption
● Discussing HPV vaccination with a qualified doctor
● Maintaining good oral and dental hygiene
● Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
● Using appropriate protection against workplace chemical exposure
● Attending regular dental and medical examinations
● Seeking evaluation for persistent voice, swallowing or throat symptoms

HPV vaccination prevents new infections with HPV types responsible for many HPV-related cancers, including some oropharyngeal cancers. Eligibility and the vaccination schedule should be discussed with a doctor.

Why Choose Onco Life’s Throat Cancer Specialists in Pune?

Onco Life provides coordinated evaluation and treatment for head, neck and throat cancers through its oncology centres serving Pune, including Talegaon and Wagholi. Patients looking for a throat cancer specialist in Pune can receive multidisciplinary guidance based on the cancer’s location, stage and effect on speech and swallowing.

The available care pathway may include:

● Surgical, medical and radiation oncology consultation
● Endoscopic, imaging and pathology-based diagnostic planning
● Multidisciplinary tumour-board review
● Advanced radiation techniques, including IMRT and Tomotherapy where clinically indicated
● Chemotherapy and supportive care
● Nutrition, speech and swallowing support
● Psychological counselling and follow-up planning

Treatment is personalised after the diagnosis and stage have been confirmed.

Conclusion

Most throat infections improve with appropriate care, but symptoms that persist should not be repeatedly dismissed as a routine infection. Seek medical evaluation when throat cancer symptoms, such as persistent hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, ear pain, a neck lump or an unexplained sore throat, last longer than two weeks. Early specialist assessment can clarify the cause and ensure that any necessary investigations or treatment begin without avoidable delay.
