A protocol controversy overshadowed a high-profile government event in the capital city on Tuesday, as Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana engaged in a heated argument over an omitted nameplate.
The incident unfolded during the inauguration of the Bajrangi Play Field in Ghatikia, which was officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Also present at the event were Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, local MLAs, and top administrative officials.
Tensions escalated when Mayor Sulochana Das noticed that her name was missing from the official foundation and inauguration plaque. Visibly upset by the oversight, she confronted BDA VC Chanchal Rana on the spot, questioning why her name had been excluded and demanding accountability regarding event protocols and invitations. An intense verbal exchange followed as the BDA chief attempted to respond to her queries.
The public confrontation drew immediate attention from attendees and dignitaries. Realising the situation was turning into a political and administrative spectacle, Ekamra MLA Babu Singh and Khordha BJP MLA Prashant Jagadev swiftly stepped in. The two legislators mediated between the Mayor and the official, successfully placating the agitated Mayor and urging everyone to move forward with the inauguration proceedings to restore normalcy.
