NHRC Internship Empowers Youth to Champion Human Rights

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India wrapped up its third Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI) for 2025–2026.


The two-week program began on August 22 and ended in early October.

Seventy-four university students from 21 States and Union Territories participated. They engaged in sessions led by NHRC members, senior officers, experts, and civil society representatives.

Smt Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, NHRC Member, addressed the valedictory session. She praised the interns’ dedication and encouraged them to raise their voices against injustice.

She emphasized NHRC’s role in promoting justice, equality, and rights for women, children, and marginalized communities. She urged youth to uphold constitutional values and defend human dignity.

Interns attended expert-led sessions in psychology, forensic science, and business and human rights. They also took virtual tours of Tihar Jail, a police station, and Asha Kiran Shelter Home.

Smt Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, Joint Secretary, NHRC, presented the internship report. She highlighted the program’s impact and the students’ active participation.

The NHRC announced winners of the book review, group research project, and declamation competitions. These activities encouraged critical thinking and advocacy skills.

Shri Samir Kumar and Lt Col Virender Singh also attended the closing ceremony. They applauded the interns’ engagement and learning outcomes.

The OSTI aims to equip students with tools to address human rights issues. It blends academic insight with practical exposure to real-world challenges.
