Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged Members of Parliament to support the amended women’s reservation bill, calling it a historic opportunity to ensure greater representation for women in decision-making roles.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of inclusive governance and encouraged lawmakers to act with sensitivity and responsibility. He stated that the time has come to secure equal political participation for women across the country.
‘Listen to Your Conscience’: Emotional Appeal to MPs
Highlighting the significance of the bill, Modi appealed to MPs to consider the women in their lives while casting their votes.
He said, “Keeping in mind your mother, sister, daughter, wife, listen to your conscience. This is a great opportunity to serve the women of the country.”
The Prime Minister added that millions of women are looking toward Parliament with hope, expecting meaningful steps toward empowerment and representation.
Focus on Women’s Representation
The proposed legislation aims to enhance women’s participation in governance, addressing the long-standing issue of underrepresentation in legislative bodies.
Modi noted that despite decades of independence, women continue to have limited presence in decision-making roles. He stressed that this reform is essential for building a more inclusive and balanced democracy.
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Delimitation
While the government has focused on women’s empowerment, opposition leaders have expressed concerns about the linkage between the quota bill and the proposed delimitation exercise.
Shashi Tharoor and other leaders have argued that the delimitation process—linked to population-based seat redistribution—could impact the representation of certain regions, particularly southern states.
They have also raised questions about whether assurances regarding seat distribution are clearly defined in law.
Debate Over Electoral Impact
The discussion around the bill has expanded into a broader debate on electoral fairness and representation. Critics have cautioned that:
- Changes in constituency boundaries may affect regional balance
- Population-based allocation could alter political representation
- Legislative clarity is needed to ensure fairness
The government, however, has maintained that concerns have been addressed and that the bill is aimed at strengthening democratic participation.
