"Tata is Being Criminally Destroyed": Rahul Gandhi Slams Business Leaders' Silence Amid High-Stakes Tata Boardroom Battle; Nirmal Sitharaman Hits Back

Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has sharply criticized India’s business leaders for their silence on the ongoing corporate crisis within the Tata Group, accusing them of cowardice while vowing to intervene.

The political flashpoint erupted following Gandhi’s post on X regarding the high-profile boardroom battle between Tata Trusts and Tata Sons.

Rahul Gandhi’s Critique and Government Rebuttal

In his social media post, Gandhi asserted that the historic conglomerate is being “criminally destroyed” and questioned corporate silence, while launching a direct attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

”Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word. How long will you stay silent? Until they own you?” Gandhi posted, adding, “Indian business is not Modi and Shah’s plaything. You lack courage. We don’t. We will ensure justice for these crimes.”

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman swiftly rebuffed the remarks, accusing Gandhi of politicizing commercial matters and attempting to incite distrust.

”You have repeatedly decried the successes of Indian industry and our entrepreneurs. Now, are you trying to incite our business leaders to join you in spreading distrust and toxicity?” Sitharaman stated, recalling the restrictive economic legacy of the pre-liberalization “licence-quota raj”.

Sitharaman emphasized that the current administration views Indian industry as vital job creators and economic drivers, supported by pro-enterprise policies.

The Heart of the Tata Boardroom Crisis

The political war of words follows intense developments within the salt-to-software conglomerate, which has been embroiled in a high-profile corporate dispute since September.

The rift escalated after Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, formally challenged the validity of N. Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as the executive chairman of Tata Sons. Furthermore, Noel Tata raised concerns regarding alleged undisclosed business dealings involving TVS Motor and an entity linked to Chandrasekaran’s family.

Political figures have increasingly weighed in on the corporate power struggle. NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar recently voiced support for preserving the philanthropic ownership structure championed by the Tata family, emphasizing that the institutional and social commitments of Tata Trusts must be protected.
