A festive evening turned tragic in Mendamal village under Biramaharajpur block of Subarnapur district, when a violent altercation reportedly fueled by alcohol led to the death of one man and left another critically injured.
The incident occurred around 10 PM near the local Shiv temple, where Ajit Khandagiri (34) of Baghamari village was allegedly hacked to death. Surjya (34), a resident of Champamal, sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at VIMSAR Burla after being shifted from Birmaharajpur hospital.
Preliminary reports suggest the clash may have stemmed from a drunken dispute following Nuakhai festivities. The exact motive remains unclear, and police have launched an investigation after registering a case. The deceased’s body has been sent for postmortem.
Tensions escalated as irate locals gathered at Birmaharajpur hospital, demanding swift action. Authorities managed to pacify the crowd by assuring appropriate legal steps would be taken.
This incident has cast a shadow over the Nuakhai celebrations, raising concerns about public safety and alcohol-related violence in rural Odisha.
