Temperatures are surging not just across Odisha or India, but globally at an alarming rate. Locations that once experienced moderate climates are now recording significantly higher readings, raising widespread concerns.

On Tuesday, Jharsuguda district saw daytime temperatures exceed 39 degrees Celsius, peaking at 39.2 degrees, marking one of the hottest days so far this season.

With the state’s weather currently remaining mostly dry, the Regional Meteorological Centre predicts a sharp escalation in heat starting from March 11. Director Manorama Mohanty stated that summer heatwaves will intensify, leading to a rise in daytime temperatures by up to 3 degrees Celsius across the region.

According to the forecast, coastal districts will experience heightened heat on Wednesday, with temperatures ranging between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius. From Thursday onward, daytime highs are expected to touch 40 degrees statewide, with Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur cities likely to surpass this threshold.

On Friday, similar conditions are anticipated in Nuapada, Titlagarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh, where temperatures could cross 40 degrees. However, a cyclonic circulation has prompted a yellow warning for thunderstorms and rain over the next 24 hours in parts of the state.

Specifically, on Wednesday, isolated areas in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak districts may see thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 30 km/h. Starting from March 12, the weather is expected to turn predominantly dry, with no further rain warnings issued, paving the way for continued temperature spikes.

Authorities urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and monitor updates from the meteorological department as the heat intensifies.
