Fondly referred to as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic contributions to Indian cinema, Manoj Kumar passed away on April 4, 2025, after battling a prolonged illness.
In his letter, PM Modi honored Kumar’s work and its profound impact on inspiring nationalism and societal pride through films like Purab Aur Paschim and Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan. “His portrayal of India’s freedom struggle brought the spirit of patriotism alive on the silver screen,” Modi wrote. A state funeral marked the final farewell to Kumar, commemorating his cinematic legacy and influence on generations.
Manoj Kumar was a recipient of numerous awards, including a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards. His works continue to resonate deeply with Indian culture and values, remaining a beacon of inspiration for artists and audiences alike.
